Although the Dead Milkmen are best taken in small doses, they deserve better treatment than this rather lame "greatest-hit" compilation, "Death Rides a Pale Cow: The Ultimate Collection."
The songs are all there -- a nice grouping of three or four tunes from all five major albums, some EP cuts and two previously unreleased tracks. The songs are still funny. Quite a few still hold up, even though most are firmly rooted in '80s culture, like "Bitchin' Camaro," "The Thing That Only Eats Hippies" and their one main unforgettable contribution to the world, "Punk Rock Girl."
Despite the gonzo, carefree fun these tracks bubble over with, the recording as a whole seems to lack inspiration. Perhaps it's the fact that the band seemingly had no hand in the production, but this CD reminds me of a corpse that won't stop twitching.
