Review - Four Great Points

Artist: June of 44

On their fourth album, June of 44 further explores sounds of spare instrumentation and guitar atmospherics. Traditional song structures are perverted, rhythms swell and are abandoned, and guitarist Jeff Mueller's approach ranges from fuzzy noodlings to great Sonic Youth-esque walls of sound.

The song "Does Your Heart Beat Slower" builds from a single-chord strum into a swirling mass, while "Cut Your Face" echoes King Crimson. Yet not all of it works. "Doomsday" qualifies as album filler, and "Shadow Pugilist" makes a failed attempt at spoken-word.

Arty but musical, experimental but not pretentious, "Four Great Points" displays a daring progressive rock band in fine musical form. Just don't expect to hear it on your radio.
