Local rockers Forest Orange have plenty of Johnny's Rockin' Bistro and Will's Pub gigs under their belts, and that live energy is captured on their debut CD, "Body High." These 11 tunes are raw and unpolished bursts of passion that benefit from a little creative mixing and plenty of chutzpah. You can almost hear the beer and neon.
The band fares best when avoiding Pearl Jam imitations. Lead singer Chad Sanford can pull Eddie Vedder and Axl Rose homages out of thin air, but he shines when he adopts a more natural-sounding voice on the acoustic "Heal" and the psychedelic "Climb." Shane Sanford's turbo-charged guitar powers the out-of-nowhere '60s soul grooves on "Funk You." "God Child" features inventive percussion by drummer David Wade, and "What's It Gonna Take" gives bassist Rick Shied a chance to burn up the frets.
A little seasoning for this Orange and the next plateful should be twice as tasty.
