Review - Duck and Cover

Artist: Mad Caddies

There is not a lot of variation in ska/punk -- it's basically upbeat reggae with a touch of distortion and a horn section. Still, the inherent "I can dance to it" feel of the genre is often infectious, as on Mad Caddies' second release, "Duck and Cover."

The first track, "Road Rash," contains a circuslike feel and a fuller horn sound than most of their peers can generate. They successfully switch gears from ska/punk to reggae -- in a basic three-chord way -- on "Popcorn" and "One Shot." The straight punk tunes, notably the horn driven "Macho Nachos," round out the standout tracks on an album that becomes endearing after several listens.
