If there is any justice in this world, Six by Seven should become very big stars. Judging by their debut album, "The Things We Make," the British band has been holding seances to the music of "Dark Side of the Moon" and has been coached in beats by the Charlatans and in smoky rock by Morphine.

But Six by Seven sounds like no one but themselves. Take "Spy Song," which starts out like a punchy rocker but drifts into something altogether acid-tinged and sexy. The compact "For You" and winding "Oh! Dear" test the borders of melodic-rock balladry -- no sugar, just spice. The music on "The Things We Make" showcases superior depth and finesse.

Masculine, edgy, intelligent -- stardom beckons for Six By Seven.
