You can't start anywhere else but the voice. Singer/songwriter Jimmie Dale Gilmore, an elder statesman of Texas country/folk, sings in such a distinctive, high, mannered tenor that I, for one, need a few seconds to readjust to it every time I hear it. His warbling voice is like thin glass, which complements the sweet, delicate ballads on "One Endless Night."

You'll find many of the glimmering names of honestly delivered, uncommercial country on this CD: Backup singers include Emmylou Harris and Jim Lauderdale; songs were written by Townes Van Zandt, John Hiatt and Jesse Winchester. What's curious is Gilmore's cover of the Grateful Dead's "Ripple," which lopes along like Dead songs tend to do, fitting in with this CD's understated mood. A quirky gem is "Mack the Knife"; Gilmore molds it into a lilting, ethereal lullaby.

The CD is impeccable, like superfine silk, but because of that, it comes across at times as actually too unruffled. There's no edginess, no release. "One Endless Night" is a long, cool drink, but you might want to have a harsh chaser at hand for later.
