Guitarist Eric Krasno, Hammond B3 organist Neal Evans and his drummer brother Alan lay down deep, lean grooves on "Doin' Something," the second full-length disc from Soulive. The trio might fairly be described as creative inheritors of the classic organ-jazz tradition a la Jimmy Smith or as savvy manipulators of a youth-friendly blend of jazz, funk and hip-hop.

"Cannonball" is all soul stew, and "Roll the Tape" kicks open with an upside-down riff reminiscent of the Meters. "Hurry Up ... and Wait" is spiced by wah-wah keyboards and a precisely placed backbeat, while the creep-crawling "One in Seven" is bolstered by Krasno's bluesy turn. Soulive may be the most consistently funky of the jazzy jam bands roaming the earth.
