Review - Scorpion

Artist: Eve

Innovative hip-hopper Eve's sophomore effort, "Scorpion," continues where her debut left off, displaying an artist who defies easy description and an astounding lyrical versatility. From the braggadocian "Who's That Girl?" to the aggressive "Cowboy" to the introspective "Be Me," Eve moves beyond the comic-book thuggism and materialism associated with mainstream hip-hop. Along with proving herself a well-rounded MC, she does a fairly good job on a remake of the Dawn Penn reggae classic "No, No, No."

Ruff Ryders über-producer Swizz Beatz and others rise to the occasion and build a compelling aural background for the rapper, especially on the bass-heavy, Dr. Dre-helmed "Let Me Blow Ya Mind." But it's a testament to Eve that the beats don't take over -- she's no puppet. In fact, after "Scorpion," it will be hard for her to release a song titled "Who's That Girl? again. If people don't know by now, there's no use even talking to them.
