Review - Iowa

Artist: Slipknot

Slipknot is the kind of band you want backing you up when you decide to storm a small country. This evil orchestra consists of nine members, three of whom are percussionists. This gives the music an extra heavy sound, with beats that bludgeon your skull as you "sing" along to "Everything Ends," "The Heretic Anthem" and "Left Behind."

Wearing masks and having designations instead of names (they are numbered 0 through 8) only adds to the mystery of this Iowa band, whose sometimes unintelligible lyrics deal with despair and/or being an outcast, something the band trumpets as a virtue. "Now I'm not pretty and I'm not cool/ but I'm fat and I'm ugly and I'm proud so fuck you" is the battle cry from "I Am Hated." But if you have the band's 1999 self-titled debut, you've heard it all before.

What kid feeling down about himself wouldn't find comfort in a masked mob growling, "Hey, we are just like you so sing along"?
