Review - Beautiful

Artist: Garbage

comment

Romantic turmoil. Fading relationships. Attitudinal ball-busting. Just a few of the now common themes prevalent in your average Garbage record. However, "Beautiful," the band's third CD, isn't an average record. Behind the power of Scottish imp Shirley Manson's sultry vocals and superproducer Butch Vig's studio skills, Garbage has created yet another impossible-to-pass-up mix of of pop, electronica and soft-core sleaze. While much of Beautiful creeps through familiar territory found on previous releases, there are actually a few surprises, including the Beach Boys-meets-The Chiffons-like number "Can't Cry These Tears" and the Patsy Cline-esque ballad "So Like a Rose." Manson's I'm-the-boss attitude drives "Shut Your Mouth" and "Untouchable" before bouncing right back into hyper-happy mode for "Parade," possibly the best song on the disc. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
