Like his superior "The Apostle,: Robert Duvall's latest writing/directing/acting hat trick wallows in moral ambiguity. Contract killer John J. Anderson is coldly professional in his chosen field, yet passionate about his tango-dancing hobby; devoted to his girlfriend and her daughter, yet not above a no-no dalliance with a dance-hall damsel (Luciana Pedraza) while he waits out an assignment to murder an Argentinian general. The exquisitely genuine dance scenes are the anti-"Chicago" (Pedraza has the proverbial legs right up to her neck), but Duvall gives himself some stilted dialogue to recite, and his determination not to pass judgment on any of John's doings makes the movie less empathic than noncommittal
