Review - Altered States of America

Artist: Agoraphobic Nosebleed

One hundred songs on a 19-minute, 3-inch CD. And the best part is, there's a lyric sheet inside. This means, you can try and sing along to "Deviant Arousal" (the entirety of the lyrics: "Proving your heterosexual credentials") or "Radical Modernism" (the entirety of the lyrics: "Red blowing out of ass and mouth/ Let the dog die alone") or "The Fag vs. the Indian" (the entirety of the lyrics: "Fuckin' fag/kill 'em/ kill the fuckin' Indian"). Created entirely with drum programs (apparently with every knob set on "max") and gut-busting guitars (apparently while on a massive meth rush) and constructed on a computer, "Altered States" renders moot the brain-crushing speed violence of bands like Carcass while utilizing gabber-esque insanity to get the point across that velocity and drugs work well together. Containing two concept albums (the 12-track "Twelve Days of Sodom" and the six-track "Altered States"), as well as several minor "suites" (one deals with the Aum Shinrikyo cult, another seems to be about porn or Jesus, I'm not sure which), these seconds-long blasts of venom are stronger than espresso and stupider than a gerbil on crack.
