Unlike the truly revolutionary sounds of Tijuana's Nortec Collective or the funk-friendly fusions of Cuban music and electro emerging from the underground, the understated grooves of Sidestepper are a little less straightforward in their modernity. Brit-in-Colombia Richard Blair is obviously fascinated with the Latin sounds of his new home country, and those are the sounds (along with a healthy dose of reggae) that provide the stylistic backbone for "3AM". Bubbling underneath, however, is a thick layer of contemporary beats. Yet, rather than subvert the inherent melodicism and mellow style of the root music, Blair crafts his beats to subtly accentuate the songs. The effect is a sublimely spicy recasting of downtempo's organic soul.
