Although drum & bass certainly needs a swift kick in the creative pants, Klute releasing a double-album conceit like this (on Breakbeat Science, no less) probably isn't what the artistic integrity doctor ordered. Two completely different albums present two starkly opposite sides of Klute -- "Lie" being a relatively adventurous foray into atmospheric d&b, "Ashamed" being an accurately titled exploration of straightforward techno. Yet for some reason, these two disparate albums are packaged together like it's "New Forms" or something. Trust me, I know "New Forms" and this is no "New Forms". Sure, the dozen tracks on "Lie Cheat & Steal" are enjoyable: "Ambient Hell" locks into an unforgettably wobbly groove, "Evo Sniffer" betrays a dark twist to the formula and "Candy Ass" is a stark stomper. And as a stand-alone d&b record, it's quite nice. But when accompanied by the retro-futurism of the cuts on "You Should Be Ashamed", the whole package falls apart. For a drum & bass producer like Klute to basically turn his back on the genre that made him -- in what seems like a calculated attempt to hedge his bets with American audiences -- is disturbing. That he does it with such mediocre cuts as "Machines Do The Work" and "Overchoice" is embarrassing.
