Planting a flag in the still-underpopulated land of emo hip-hop, GSL (a label best known for abrasive indie rock like The Locust and Le Shok) presents Subtitle, a thoroughly sleepy cat with a decidedly fractured outlook. A singular character (known to his mother as Giovanni Marks, Subtitle crafted all the tracks by himself on bedroom equipment), the rhymes and sounds on "Recovering" are of a uniquely claustrophobic and introspective nature. Although Marks doesn't go in for the reflective soul-clap of Anticon's best, he does spin out impressionistic lyrics that are as evocative as they are confusing.
