Question: What happens when an indie-pop demigoddess (Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn) and an underground publishing maven (Ginger Brooks Takahashi) hole up together in a farmhouse for a monthlong songwriting session? Answer: Interludes pile up faster than used tissues during allergy season. Indeed, ineffectual bursts and fits of ukelele, plucked guitar, xylophone and found sound most folks come across while in the act of entering or leaving their homes abound on "Songs from the Black Mountain Music Project." But for every pair of throwaways, there's the seed of a decent idea that should have been given more space and nourishment. "The Party" is a particularly good example, wherein Yom Tov Zeitlyn's dizzy keyboard pattern figure-eights over Takahashi's cello kindling like a firefly hopping from one Japanese lantern to the next. Aside from a soulful rendering of the hymnal staple "Rock of Ages," the handful of actual songs here aren't on par with Yom Tov Zeitlyn's prior work, and casual fans would do well to pass on this and trainspot for her next album. The audience most likely to embrace Songs consists of its makers and their friends.
