Both well within and well beyond the cutesy kitsch of most imported J-Pop, Puffy AmiYumi thrives on the same caffeinated guitar-rock that made Shonen Knife and Supersnazz such addictive treats. The group delivers buckets of polished pop hooks that are most certainly a result of the saccharine mainstream Tokyo scene from which they emerged. It's hard to find fault with a band that directly quotes "Video Killed the Radio Star" (as they do note-for-note on "Tokyo Nights") or alternately sounds like ELO or live-action anime characters, but at the same time. It's somewhat of a challenge to justify listening to the "Teen Titans Theme" in your car and acting like it's a legitimate song. Regardless, the undeniable energy on "Nice". is nothing short of infectious and, as long as you don't think too much about it, it's a hell of a good time.
