Instrumental music rarely begs blind allegiance, but in the case of this split EP (with a bonus DVD) between two of its most heavy innovators, the implied narratives come to their own divine life. TMP's opener, "You Give Me Problems About My Business," is pure, quiet frustration, swelling subversively throughout into a climactic release, all weaving guitars and insistent, shuffling high hats. "Saint Rosa of Lima" brings similarly stirring progression, with muted keyboard punches pulling away just at the end. Athens noodlers Maserati wax cinematic on their own "Closer Than You Know How," working the low end to the point that my computer is currently vibrating, as are my lightbulbs. Heavy stuff, minus the self-indulgence.
