This is getting a little out of hand. "Doom metal" was once all about depresso, low-end heaviness, darker than stoner rock and heavier than, well, anything else. Now it seems that marijuana truly is a gateway drug, and all the pot-smoking sad boys have turned into meth-addled basket cases. "Things Viral" is certainly slow and heavy, as to be expected from a project featuring James Plotkin (Scorn, Death Ambient) and Stephen O'Malley (Sunn 0). But the dementia level is pushed up a few dozen notches by the presence of former Plotkin associate Alan Dubin, whose twitchy performance here possibly equals the red-level strangeness Julian Cope supplied to the last Sunn 0 album. Said vocal oddities recast this hour of sludge into an hour of 16-rpm mental-ward karaoke. Yeah, it's that good.
