Review - Hot Women

Artist: Various Artists

Technically, the full title for this amazing disc is "Hot Women: Women Singers From the Torrid Regions of the World, Taken from Old 78 RPM Records, 1920s to 1950s." And in true "Ghost World" fashion, R. Crumb presents ultraobscure recordings that are as collection-obsessive as they are enjoyably listenable. Brazil, Chile, Tunisia, Tahiti, Algeria, "somewhere in East Africa" and other off-the-pop-culture-map locales are represented, linked only by the gender of the singer and the pleasing blast of "where have these been all my life" that you feel when you hear something completely new. Varying between "native music," bluesy affectations and novelty pop, these two dozen songs are most certainly unlike anything you've heard recently.
