Review - I Like It

The idea is great -- have a handful of bad-ass DJs select four of their "all-time favourite tracks," allowing us mere mortals to see what these guys are spinning at home. And, with DJ Hell, Peter Kruder, Michael Reinboth and Theo Thönnessen providing the tracks, the selection is unsurprisingly cool. Also unsurprisingly, Peter Kruder is into hip-hop (Masta Ace) and atmospherics (Brian Eno & Daniel Lanois) and DJ Hell is into arch, angular pop (Television Personalities, The Pop Group) and sultry, minimalist funk (Max Berlin). This is, in other words, one of the few compilations you'll ever hear that features a David Sylvian/Ryuichi Sakamoto collaboration and a track from Graf Hadik. What makes "I Like It" exceptional is the fact that, despite what was surely a difficult impulse to resist, none of the DJs remix, crossfade or beat-mix any of their cuts: Each of the 16 songs are delivered in a straight-up fashion, just how you'd listen to it at home or on a Walkman.
