Review - One Night With Blue Note DVD

Artist: Various Artists

Most DVD reissues of previously released VHS presentations are simply cleaned up and repackaged. This disc of the "historic all-star reunion concert" that re-launched the Blue Note label in 1985 goes beyond that minimal standard and subtly revises the entire film. There are re-edited shots, remixed sound and a keener eye placed on the significance of the night. It doesn't dramatically redefine the film, but this DVD certainly makes it more enjoyable. With more than two dozen Blue Note stars stepping on to the stage over the course of the night, the effect is truly impressive. Whether it's the rambunctious reading of "Cantaloupe Island" with a fresh-from-"Rockit" Herbie Hancock leading Joe Henderson (who has a little trouble following the charts), Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter and Tony Williams that opens the disc or the jaw-dropping, fist-pounding Cecil Taylor piano solo that closes it, it's easy to see why that little blue and white label has meant so much to so many people for so long.
