Movie: Undertow

Our Rating: 1.50

Somnambulistic schlockmeister David Gordon Green (All the Real Girls) directs another dreary, self-important rural drama that takes forever to advance its insignificant aims. You'll be fighting to stay awake as Green (with the aid of two nearly blameworthy co-writers) doles out this cliché-ridden story of a "terrible" tragedy that befalls two sets of siblings. The older pair (Dermot Mulroney, Josh Lucas) is locked in a bitter dispute over a contested family treasure, leaving the next generation (Devon Alan, Jamie Bell) to suffer the fallout of their bloody, faux-biblical rivalry. The nonsensical freeze-frames and other hugely inappropriate visual indulgences are easy to spot, given the movie's insistence on idling at a storytelling speed of 5 mph. Get ready for an interminable exploration of the two most shopworn questions in the familial pantheon: Am I my brother's keeper? And are we there yet?
