Review - Paper White/Big Black Square Eps

It's not surprising that these San Francisco psychedelicists saw fit to follow up their attention-getting We Move Through Weather LP of, like, five minutes ago with two EPs that sound not much like it at all. While Weather moved toward clattery guitar/noise skronkiness, these two EPs are quite different indeed. The four "songs" on Paper White are excellent: all thumping tribalism wrapped in woozy atmospherics and absent-minded melodicism, resembling what might happen if The Album Leaf tapped the guy from Neurosis to play drums. The one-track/40-minute Big Black Square is full-on ambience, complete with background raindrops, muted feedback and, at one brief point, that Bionic Man sound, as if one percussion-heavy bit from Paper White was inflated into a fantastically overlong track. Probably a good idea at the time.
