The Legendary Prestige Quintet
Legendary Prestige Quintet, The
While Columbia merrily continues its well-curated boxed-set pillaging of recordings Miles made during his 20 prime years at the label, it's taken the folks over at Prestige quite some time to realize that taking a precise approach might be a good idea. The eight-CD Complete Prestige Recordings
from 1990 covered all five years of Davis' work for Prestige; this set covers just one: three single days between November 1955 and October 1956 of furious studio work that produced four albums' worth of contract-ending material. The Quintet ' Davis, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones ' nailed these nearly three dozen cuts (mostly standards) with ease and precision, but not without fire and flair. It's the fourth disc of previously unreleased live cuts (including a Tonight Show
appearance) that shows a group that was a model of skill and (more importantly) dynamic communication.
