Ever since getting fooled by the vintage-looking (and vintage-sounding) releases on the very much contemporary Desco label, mildly hard-core funk fans ' that is, those who have Hair & Thangs on vinyl, but who don't have Dusty Groove on speed-dial ' have learned to maintain a permanent expression of skepticism when it comes to Yet Another Lost Funk Treasure. The seemingly unstoppable flow of ass-kicking rarities has increased exponentially in recent years, and though most of them have been legit, when it comes to a band of high-schoolers laying down the funk from 1968-1978, bullshit alarms begin pealing throughout the land. I honestly have no idea if KSB was a for-real group, and it doesn't really matter if they were. The notion of some Texas high school kids being one of the funkiest bands in the land is intriguing, but the hard-driving, brass-heavy, overcaffeinated cuts on this set make it irrelevant who's playing. The first disc of studio cuts are surprisingly smokin', but the second disc of live recordings (evidence, perhaps, that they were for real?) is what will knock you on your ass.
