With artwork not dissimilar to Mastodon's Leviathan and a general theme that's even more Melville-ian, one might think that German doom-dealers Ahab are attempting to create a complementary seascape of heaviness. Not quite. While Mastodon picked up on the soul-crushing undercurrent of Moby Dick, the crew of Ahab (which claims two members of Midnattsol, along with an ex-member of Endzeit) toils within a genre known as 'German funeral doom.â? In other words, if regular old doom metal wasn't wrenchingly punishing enough for you, make it German and put it at a funeral. Thus, The Wretched Sea is the sound (if not the story) of a dirty, hungry and spiritually corrupt crew stuck on a boat in a horrible storm with nothing to eat but dead rats and moldy bread. Super-slow, super-low and relentlessly guttural, if Mastodon had released this album, they would never have seen the inside of a major label's offices.
