In the universe of high-speed vinyl manipulators, Kid Koala distinguishes himself from his peers in two ways. First, he tends to choose source material that's outside of the accepted canon. While most DJs stick with the well-tilled soil of '70s and '80s funk B-sides for their mixes, this Canadian Kid brings jazz, Dixieland, classic rock, ska and sundry other obscurities. Second, while he includes the chirps and scribbles that turntablism fans have come to expect, he also uses his scratching skills to introduce new melodic components to his mixes. A horn hit or even a single synthesized tone becomes the raw material for tonal, pitched solos that elevate his work from mere mixing into the realm of composition. With Your Mom's Favorite DJ, Kid Koala delivers a short-but-sweet journey through his crates, with his typically playful and buoyant spirit. This is hip-hop that means you no harm, that invites you to wiggle and nod and smile, without being cloying. While he doesn't break any new ground, he does provide a fun little trip that even your mom could enjoy.
