Anyone who's checked out Sonic Youth's many side projects over the years ' Free Kitten, Ciccone Youth, Mirror/Dash ' knows to approach anything but the main event with caution. The chance that you're in for 15 minutes of horrible squawking feedback or the lulling dullness of an amplifier's hum runs very high. The group's self-indulgence enables them to craft their proper albums with a healthy dose of experimentalism. It also means that the shit that ends up on the cutting-room floor is there for a reason. This 11-track collection of 'B-sides and raritiesâ? ranging from 1994 through 2003 isn't quite that extreme. 'Blink,â? from the Pola X soundtrack, is a strong, moody tune, but 'Fire Engine Dream,â? 'Campfireâ? and 'Loop Catâ? represent an instrumental side that sounds best if you're loaded up on Vicodin and have a fully functioning lava lamp available. Not uninteresting, but hardly vital.
