A good spy thriller is one that has you leaving the theater wanting to become a spook. The agents populating this Robert De Niro'directed snoozer, however, are as privileged and cliquish as they are mundane. Edward Wilson (as portrayed by Matt Damon) is an unappealing and gray secret agent. While this may be the point of the character ' a numb fixer amidst the swirl of Cold War history-making ' it doesn't make the nearly three hours of The Good Shepherd engaging. Watching Wilson trudge his way through Skull and Bones fraternization, a loveless marriage, bad parenting, manipulative double-crosses and, oh yeah, being blamed for screwing up the Bay of Pigs invasion, it's hard to muster up the least bit of feeling for him or any of the overly strung-out plot. Though illuminating as a history primer on the CIA, The Good Shepherd has the spark of an 8 a.m. college lecture.
