Recorded over a year in five studios, the Apples in Stereo's first album in five years is the most ambitious to date. Which is to say it's the most musically elaborate and polished of their sonic collages. Like their compatriots in the Elephant 6 collective scene (Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel), whom Apples in Stereo's Robert Schneider guided along their way, it's everything and the kitchen sink the entire time. Like a thousand gnats buzzing around your head, you get lost in the maddening swirl. With that in mind, highlights include the lo-fi inspired 'Sun Is Out,â? which begins on a crappy tape recorder before being brought indoors. Now-departed drummer Hilarie Sidney contributes the genuinely catchy 'Sunndal Song,â? and a goofy thing like 'Non-Pythagorean Composition Pt. 1,â? a series of tones based on a mathematical theorem, doesn't last long enough to make you angry.
