Directed by Rugrats creator Gabor Csupo, this adaptation of Katherine Paterson's excellent children's book is firmly within the (seemingly lost) tradition of Disney films that extol the virtues and powers of youthful imagination. Two fifth-grade outcasts find refuge in a kingdom of their own fanciful and magical creation, and this world gives them the strength to deal with the everyday struggles that all kids must endure. Surprisingly light on special-effects wizardry, Terabithia is instead a marvel of optimistic storytelling that ' for a movie with giant tree-trolls and flying hedgehogs, at least ' is remarkably realistic. The third act goes necessarily dark, maybe a little too much so for the youngest of viewers, but the sense of loss that it conveys ensures that Terabithia is that much more compelling.
