A giant squid/catfish mutation born of U.S. arrogance leaps from Seoul, South Korea's Han River, wreaks havoc, and steals the daughter of a struggling family, who, after getting a cell-phone message from her, tries to rescue the girl from the monster's lair. Getting in their way: an inept/corrupt Korean government backed by American interests who are floating a story claiming that the creature is the host for some horrific virus. Alternately scary, funny and inspiring, Bong Joon-ho's first-class monster mash is also a scalding rebuke to U.S. interventionism, profiteering and general developing-world opportunism, and a lovely story of familial bonding. In a word, amazing.
