For his Plug Research outing, Brooklyn's David Wingo abandoned his presumably noisy digs, opting instead to communicate lush, loosely flowing desert hymns as Ola Podrida. Wingo hails originally from Austin, Texas, and has film score credits to his name, an aspect of his background that contributes considerably to his compositions as Ola Podrida, which morphs into a full band for live shows. The road movie'type speedy acoustic picking that rolls beneath 'A Clouded Viewâ? would suit any of the wide-open spaces filmed in Five Easy Pieces, but Wingo's sentiments are eventually as large as life, with prominent piano and slide guitar that sweep away the idea of this working better against moving images ' it's crisp and worthy of repeat visits on its own. On the playful swing of 'Photo Booth,â? Wingo paints vivid portraits of promiscuity, sounding as weathered and hungover as Micah P. Hinson, while a base of acoustic guitars fattens steadily, dotted with bright leads and roomy stomp-and-clap percussion. Tracks like 'Cindyâ? and 'Lost and Foundâ? are adversely wild and messy, and Wingo's got cymbal crashes and lap steel behind him while he blasts through a distinctive debut effort.
