Behind the laborious-sounding moniker, Londoner Mat Ranson's searing, Warp Records'type electronica is split by fluid chirps and sometimes volatile synths that swoop rapidly in and out of range. Ranson steers clear of complacency by incorporating a mix of both software-driven elements and sampled sources for his feats. This approach is center stage in a largely percussive instrumental hip-hop number called 'Polska,â? which closed out his 2006 77 and Rising 10-inch with both dagger-edged drum programming and a snare-roll loop looming in the background. Although Ranson's Isle of Wight EP packs the most cohesive track list here, check late-album brooders 'Largo Winchâ? and 'The Azimuth at Zero Degreesâ?: They brim with techy radio-static pulses and heady tempos, demanding you familiarize yourself with this lesser-known maestro.
