The second installment in this Russian epic fantasy trilogy, Day Watch, finally makes its way to American shores. Three years after the original Night Watch, this new film barely takes a breath before thrusting the audience back into the middle of the ongoing battle between light and darkness. If you missed the first film, the story line simply follows the forces of light (good guys) and the forces of darkness (bad guys) as they battle throughout present-day Moscow in an ironic attempt to keep the balance of an ancient peace agreement. Day Watch centers on the hunt for the 'chalk of destiny,â? which is essentially (and unsurprisingly) a large piece of chalk with the ability to rewrite the past. The rest of the plot is dense and hard to follow, as the breathtaking visuals are hard to take your eyes off long enough to read the subtitles. The pretentious plot aside, this is a highly stylized film that effortlessly blends brilliant imagery with heart-pounding action sequences.
