Just as Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives pinned MC Aesop Rock against a slew of acid-washed beats in 2005, furthering the ornamental productions he and his contributors explored on Bazooka Tooth, None Shall Pass boasts an inspired canvas and bountiful wit from the outer-borough chatterbox. Ace Rock demands an attentive ear ' and it was a tad easier to decode his erratic but carefully structured tales six years ago ' on the indie-universe-rattling 'Daylight,â? for example; the Labor Days beats, compelling in their somber grooves, were less animated. Seven of None's fiercely psychedelic tracks produced by Blockhead (who was also responsible for "Daylight"), all of which sparkle with fast decks work from DJ Big Wiz. The raw rhymes have returned; the near absence of verses on Aesop's All Day: Nike + Original Run mix is atoned for on None; and nostalgia for schoolyard mischief ('Catacomb Kidsâ?) as well as a sleek doomsday-styled joint featuring El-P's studio hand and matter-of-fact observations ('Gun for the Whole Familyâ?) mark standouts on Ace's best record in years.
