Beats knock hesitantly on Odd Nosdam's Level Live Wires in tandem with gratuitous tape loops and field recordings; this could almost pass for a grimier Boards of Canada release, heavy on processed guitar tones. Soft, distorted majesty tempers more than an occasional occurrence of gloom on the first solo LP from Odd Nosdam since 2005's Burner, and as collaborators were gathered for assistance on Level by David Madson (Nosdam's birth name), diverse sonics from track to track render the effort a considerable success. Although Madson's remix for BoC's 'Dayvan Cowboyâ? in 2006 chopped and bulked up the flowery original a tad too much, the Clouddead alum's morphing works on Level, such as 'Freakout 3,â? feature a perfect storm of elements that induce a near out-of-body experience. Bracken/Hood's Chris Adams lends a mixing hand and fuzzy keyboards on the slow-simmering 'Freakout 3,â? and the sporadic muddied vocal contributions are also his. Other than (TV on the Radio's) Tunde Adebimpe's spot on 'The Kill Tone Two,â? Madson buries the vocals beneath Level's blanketing textures, so not even the various sources he pulls the beats from cut in on the best part: ample, gorgeous noise.
