Selection Reminder: Mac Miller tonight at the Beacham!

Monday, May 16Mac Miller, Rapsody

If the career of the last preppy-styled, pro-weed, white rapper from Pennsylvania, Asher Roth, is anything to go by, then Mac Miller faces a tough time escaping the difficulties involved in promoting non-threatening, suburban-friendly rap: After creating a little interest with a DJ Drama-hosted mixtape, Roth’s “humorous” tweet about “nappy-headed hoes” instantly burst his hype bubble and left him reconsidering his privileged-boy image. With laid back, saccharine songs like “Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza” and “Senior Skip Day,” Miller is seeking to appeal to a similar college-lifestyle crowd, although key to his ascent may be the endorsement of his generation’s most successful rapping weed ambassador, Wiz Khalifa. Miller’s current tour begins the promotion for his debut project, Best Day Ever: Dope Album, slated for release later this year. –Phillip Mlynar (with Rapsody; 7 p.m. at the Beacham, 46 N.
