Monday, June 13Christopher Bell

It’s hard not to love a guy who plays the cello – it’s such an unwieldy instrument that, despite the resurgence in popularity of oddball stringed instruments (say, the ukulele, for instance), it resists really becoming the next “it” thing for the trendy set. Lots of people have decided in the past decade to learn to play the now nearly ubiquitous banjo, but who wants to lug around a cello? Jamestown, New York-based singer/neo-folk musician Christopher Bell does, and he’s not just doing it as a gimmick. He’s a multi-instrumentalist who plays cello, banjo and harmonica (and he sings), and his quirky schtick makes for a good show – if you can picture something along the lines of Jonathan Richman meets Richard Thompson, but with a guy playing an electric cello instead of a guitar. If you can’t picture it, just go ahead and see the show. It won’t cost you anything, and you probably won’t run across a solo artist with a cello again anytime soon. He’s also doing a show at Bikes, Beans & Bordeaux on Corinne Drive on Thursday, June 9. – Erin Sullivan (7:30 p.m. at the Audubon Park Community Market in the parking lot of Stardust Video & Coffee, 1842 E.
