Saturday, Dec. 3Orlando Pottery and Ceramics Festival

Ever watch the scene in 1990’s Ghost where Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze nuzzle up behind the potter’s wheel? Then you should know that sort of thing “only happens in the movies.” Because when it comes to throwing pottery, it takes a lot more skill than just a jig here, a jolly there, a slop of glaze and a toss into the kiln. Potters are widely revered for their steady hand and eye-catching attention to detail, and that certainly describes the nearly 60 artists participating in this weekend’s inaugural Orlando Pottery and Ceramics Festival. They’ll present a bevy of ceramic pieces, ranging from the pretty (Barbara Horvath’s “Hope Jars,” Scott Thorpe’s vases) to the practical (Dawn M. Ferguson’s teapots, Jack Toepke’s pitchers), from the obscure (Lisa Frasier’s animal coin banks) to the seasonal (Cathy Galgano’s pumpkin tea-light bowls). And after perusing that talented spread, we suggest filling up on eats from Que Rico Colombian Fast Food, the SwedeDish food truck or Eustis’ Shred-A-Bowls and then grinding down the beginning stages of holiday crazy with tunes from Sanford’s Celery City String Band. – Aimee Vitek (9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Loch Haven Neighborhood Center, 610 N.
