Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 31-Jan. 1 – Central Florida Soap Box Derby Holiday Rally
Just like Adele, you too can have it all this weekend by rolling in the deep with the annual Central Florida Soap Box Derby Holiday Rally. Soap box racing, which (perhaps coincidentally) started during the Great Depression, features young drivers who race their homemade, gravity-powered cars down hills and inclines – winners move up in the standings for a place at the world championships next summer in Akron, Ohio. Apparently, the races at Derby Park are a pretty big deal on the ol’ racing circuit – Sanford’s received the award for “best race city” a whopping eight times
which, admittedly, might be one of the city’s few claims to fame. – Casey Morell (8:30 a.m. at Derby Park, 2199 Oregon Ave., Sanford, centralfloridasoapboxderby.com, free for spectators)
