Kay Redfield Jamison

It’s a powerful combination, a patient who is also a doctor. Does it make it harder to trust those treating you, when you have the same training and information at your disposal? Or does it make it easier to understand what’s happening to you? Kay Redfield Jamison, a professor of psychiatry and sufferer of manic depression (she rejects the term “bipolar”), will address this dichotomy as she reads from one of her many books tonight at Rollins College. An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness describes her resistance to treatment, something quite common to sufferers of a disease that manifests itself as euphoria (when it isn’t manifesting as black despair) – who’d want to give that up, especially when the treatment is, literally, a real downer? Jamison’s laser-sharp intellect and warm personality are key weapons in her campaign to clarify an all-too-common disorder – for those who have it and for those attempting to understand a loved one’s struggle. – Jessica Bryce Young
