Perhaps it seems disrespectful when the overture of The Barber of Seville begins, and all you can think of is Elmer Fudd chasing Bugs Bunny into the Hollywood Bowl. Maybe it dismays you that the aria “Largo al factotum della città” always brings to mind Bugs yodeling “FEEEE-gar-o, Fee-gar-o, Fee-gar-o!” Don’t sweat it; Looney Tunes cartoons are the closest thing most people get to an education in classical music these days. But do try to stifle the giggle fits when Florida Opera Theatre, fresh off the success of their first production, The Medium, tackles Rossini’s best-known work Sunday afternoon. It’s an opera with plenty of laughs, but no rabbits – except the ones artistic director Frank McClain and conductor-chorus master Robin Stamper have pulled out of their hats by returning the art form, live, to Orlando after the sad demise of Orlando Opera. This four-city tour is a collaboration with St. Augustine’s and Vero Beach’s companies, and pulls together a cast ranging from local UCF grads to veteran New York singers Luigi Boccia and David Salsbery Fry. – Jessica Bryce Young
