About 25 years ago, Tom Snyders was an itinerant, stand-up comedian playing obscure clubs in places not exactly known for being citadels of comedy – Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas – what’s funny in Kansas? When his car broke down and he was 1,500 miles away from his next gig, he made the ridiculous decision to bicycle his way to it. Then his buddies on the circuit convinced him that the bike gimmick was a winner and would definitely land him a spot on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson.
Snyders never became a late-night sensation, but he kept the bike. Two and a half decades and 160,000 miles later, he’s still playing obscure clubs and festivals. And he still bikes to all of them. In fact, he’s biked through all 50 states, as well as 33 countries across six continents.
You Can’t Bring That Bike in Here is Snyder’s signature storytelling piece, a freeform recitation and slide show of some of his travels -- and it's a hoot. He’s still got a stand-up's gift for one-liners, and the funniest portion of his one-hour show is a photo essay of some of the world’s wackiest road signs, accompanied by his wry commentary.
What Snyders captures can’t be seen by traveling in a car or plane. You’ve simply got to hit the road to uncover the immense inanity of the landscape, as he has so hilariously done. So yes, it seems there are some very funny things in Kansas. Who knew? -- Al Krulick
