Saturday, June 16 – Energy & Rhythm
101 S. Garland Ave.
A new gallery opening – not just a one-night party, but an actual gallery! – is always a thing to celebrate, so say hello to G4 Studios, newly open on Church Street in the historic Exchange Building. For G4’s inaugural exhibition, they’ve chosen to show work by a pair of friends: Laura Riekki and Lesley Silvia, both avid competitive rowers. Riekki’s impressionistic oil paintings illuminate the combination of bodily grace and power necessary to send a shell skimming across the water. Silvia (whose papercuts graced the cover of our 2011 Best of Orlando issue) also focuses on the body, delicately carving colored paper into 2-D works that capture the anger and beauty of the female psyche. This opening (the show and the gallery) should give a frisson of hope to Orlando art lovers – and buyers. – Jessica Bryce Young
