Saturday, Sept. 15 – Mexico Vive!
Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre
401 W. Livingston St.
Traditionally, on the eve of Mexican Independence Day (Sept. 16), the president rings a bell in Mexico City and cries independence like Hidalgo. The next morning, the party starts. In Florida, however, bells frighten us and an errant rebel yell can land you on the business end of an isolationist’s Second Amendment rights. So to keep things nice and tidy, Bob Carr is hosting this night of freedom bells in the form of, well, mariachis and a history lesson. Presented by nonprofit Casa De Mexico and benefiting low-income Mexican families, Mexico Vive will feature fashion designer Armando Mafud, who will bring the country’s long and arduous march toward GOP punching bag to life with vivid, colorful costumes, the Saltillo Eres Tu band and Ballet Folklorico de Saltillo, a Bollywood-esque dance troupe who can take your breath away once they’re all in sync. – Justin Strout
