Sunday, Nov. 4 – Orlando Japan Festival
The Village at Hunter's Creek
13574 Village Park Drive
This cultural event might be happening at the Village at Hunter’s Creek, but you’ll feel as if you’re lost somewhere in the middle of Japan. Our suggestion? Pick up a word or two in Japanese beforehand. That way you won’t stick (so much) out of place when the taiko drumming of the Orlando Taiko Dojo starts. The Orlando Japan Festival will have you watching 100 traditional Japanese performers create rapid beats, dancing ladies decked out in Oriental kimonos (visually, think Memories of a Geisha), and martial arts demos. Local vendors will be selling authentic Japanese clothing, so you won’t have to rely on the Sapporo and sake to claim your inner samurai. Cooking demos, live folk music and a tea ceremony round out the day, while a portion of the proceeds support the Japanese earthquake relief effort. No worries, you can say domo arigato to us later. – Salo Steinvortz
