Bach Festival Society Presents Brooklyn Rider

Sunday, Nov. 4 – Brooklyn Rider 3 p.m. Tiedtke Concert Hall, Rollins College 1000 Holt Ave., Winter Park 407-646-2182 $35-$50

Of note for contemporary classical fans: the return to Central Florida of internationally recognized string quartet Brooklyn Rider, who seemed to charm literally everyone who came into contact with them during their Orange County Schools residency in 2010. On this trip, they will once again work with local music students, including visits to all six of the elementary schools that participate in A Gift for Music, the nonprofit stringed instrument training program. (As part of their educational outreach, the group will premiere a work written for them by jazz pianist and composer Vijay Ayer, but unless you’re in elementary school, you’re unlikely to hear it.) Their program at Tiedtke Concert Hall features staples of 20th-century quartet literature (Stravinsky’s Three Pieces, Bartók’s String Quartet No. 2); Culai by Lev Zhurbin – who is, as far as I know, the only composer to work with both Yo-Yo Ma and Jay-Z – and a piece composed by the bearded young Brooklynites themselves. – F.C.
