Tuesday, Nov. 20 – The Sword, Eagle Claw Gypsyhawk
46 N. Orange Ave.
Oofah, look at that lineup. Even if you were clueless about all of them, could this be mistaken for anything but a very heavy metal bill? Yet if you are familiar then you realize how much of a classic-metal revival dream this is. Foremost is Austin doom-stoners the Sword, who seem to be back on track with the newly released Apocryphon LP. It’s not quite as mammoth as their early work, but they’ve regained some of the muscle they lost on 2010’s sci-fried Warp Riders. Still, few bands in the last decade have done as much to make metal cool again as the Sword have. And though entirely instrumental, label mates Eagle Claw are less peers to Pelican as they are disciples of British-metal and old-school thrash with intricate, heroically latticed riff work. And Metal Blade recording act Gypsyhawk brings melody-minded hard rock loaded with trading, triumphant leads from California. Sleeves totally optional. – Bao Le-Huu
